Chemical Peels
Chemical peeling is a technique used to
improve the appearance of the skin. A chemical solution is applied to
the skin, which cause the superficial layers of the skin to separate and
peel off. This process allows new skin to regenerate. Today, with the
public’s increasing interest in skin rejuvenation and slowing the
effects of the aging process, chemical peeling has emerged as an
exciting anti-aging procedure. Results of chemical peeling may also be
enhanced by new laser/light-based rejuvenation techniques. We have
several types of chemical peels available, your nurse aesthetician will
decide which one is right for you.
USES- Chemical peeling is used to treat
fine lines, especially under the eyes and around the mouth. Wrinkles
caused by sun damage, aging and hereditary factors can be reduced or
even eliminated with this procedure. Mild scarring and certain types of
acne may also be treated with chemical peeling. In addition,
pigmentation of the skin in the form of sun spots, age spots, liver
spots, freckles, blotchiness due to taking birth control pills, and skin
that is dull in texture and color may be improved with chemical
peeling. Acne can be effectively treated with chemical peels.
SAFETY- Chemical peels are very safe.
With certain skin types however, there is a risk of developing a
temporary or permanent color change. Although very low, there is a
possibility that the skin could remain persistently red for up to
several months following the procedure.
TREATMENT PROCEDURE- The skin is
thoroughly cleaned prior to the peel with an agent that removes excess
oils, and the eyes and hair are protected. One or more chemical
solutions are then applied to the skin. These applications produce
separation of the superficial layers of the skin and eventually these
layers peel off, enabling rejuvenized skin to appear. During the
procedure, most patients experience a warm sensation that may last about
five to ten minutes, followed by a slight stinging sensation.
POST TREATMENT- Depending on the type of
peel, there may be a mild to moderate burning sensation. This sensation
is usually short in duration and does not require analgesics.
Superficial peeling usually causes redness, followed by scaling that
lasts three to five days. It is important to avoid exposure to the sun
immediately after a chemical peel since the new skin is fragile.
RESULTS- For the most effective results
we recommend a series of 6 peels these should be performed every two
weeks. Following the initial 12 week program we recommend a maintenance
program to maintain your great looking new skin.
